Soothing Muscle Salve Monograph

Unguentum Lenitivum Musculorum — Formula Relaxatio

I. Description

A warming botanical salve designed to relieve muscular tension, ease post-

activity soreness and support circulation.

Combining aromatic relaxants with topical anti-inflammatories, this balm

encourages comfort, fluid movement and recovery — ideal for areas holding

stress or strain.

II. Composition & Virtues

Arnica (Arnica montana) — Anti-inflammatory, supports resolution of

bruising and strain

St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) — Soothes nerve-rich tissues, easing

sharp tension

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) — Softens stiffness; supports tissue repair

Essential oils:

Black Pepper — Circulatory stimulant; warming analgesic

Rosemary — Invigorating; assists muscular clearance

Lavender — Nervine relaxant; calms reactive tissue

Wintergreen — Salicylate-rich; reduces pain perception

III. Indications

Localized muscular tension, post-exercise fatigue, mechanical strain,

neck/shoulder tightness, and cold-aggravated stiffness.

Arnica — Encourages movement of stuck circulation; settles soreness after

physical effort.

St. John’s Wort — A balm to bruised nerves; softens neural irritation.

Comfrey — Root-deep comfort where tissue feels taut or weary.

V. Application

Massage a small amount into affected areas 2–3 times daily or after exertion.

Can be used pre-activity to warm and prepare muscles.

VI. Safety

For external use only.Avoid broken skin or open wounds.

Do not apply to large areas in pregnancy or if sensitive to salicylates.

Wash hands after application to prevent eye contact.
